Postal Presents

Beginning with this project, i thought of various household objects to be used in this project. My ideas were from a stainless steel lamp with a organic form, to a plate rack, to my final idea of a Jewelry stand.

I decided to go with a natural form, and followed the path of a tree, and played around with different shapes, from a jagged geometric shape to a relaxed and free flowing form. The shape of the final tree, is very smooth and relaxing.

I decided to also use the remaining template as a photo frame. The use of transparent acrylic allowed for the use of the photos in the frame, and because of the strength and gloss of the acrylic material, I achieved the desired clean cut and look of the product I wanted . The matching pieces, when delivered in the post, would be a suprising present for a female consumer, and would not only be a present, but also be a continually useable product.

Here is the instruction sheet, and also the Poster, showing my products name, 'Stemma', which means family tree in latin, adding to the significance and emotional connection of the product.

  1. Great design! I really love the line of the tree. I love the colour. I also really like the simplicity of the construction.
I think it's a brilliant idea to use the 'offcut' outer case as a photo frame. I think it could be improved by perhaps making the photo frame into a mirror.
Over all a fantastic design that I would love to own!
    Good work.

  2. I think the design is really cool in the fact that the rounded edges on the tree stems sort of give the product a humanised form, as it sort of looks like fingers to me, and with the product being an accessory stand, it could sort of be a mannequin to test the look of certain accessories. I also like how you don't waste materials and make use of the remaining sheet material, I think it's a really smart idea and definately reduces waste when manufacturing!

But, I dont know if you really want a picture frame shaped in a tree form? It's true that the material is see through but being empty in a tree shape could be quite wierd as a photo frame.

Other than that, nice work, nice model and great idea!

  3. Great design. I like the use of the tree with connotations of family memories. The workmanship looks great.
The picture frame however could be further developed as the cutout may have a different effect when an actual photo is inseted in. Maybe have it in just clear, not red.
    Great job !

  4. The first thing that comes to my head is a family tree and it'll be a great thing to have in my opinion!

Only thing as jason mentioned above is that have it in clear not red.
    Other than that nice!

  5. This design is simple and elegant, the red form makes me think of coral.
I think it is a shame that you weren't able to add in a third sheet, but I can appreciate that it would have been very difficult.
I think you could strengthen the idea of the tree growing by widening the branches and or making the design less symmetrical. Although this is still a beautiful form there is something eerie and mystical about it.
Well done on finding a use for the packaging tray, this is something I am yet to see amongst other designs.

  6. This as a quirky and fun design, yet it also seems to evoke a sense of nature and spirituality.
I can immediately see it in the bedroom of a girl with a unique sense of style as a decorative piece to hang her accessories.
The red works well with the form you've designed, I think it generates a warmth which accentuates the organic shape of the tree and ties into your theme of family. Hence I think sentimental photos would work well with the picture frame.
It's simple to assemble, which is always good. I think you've successfully catered to the wants of your target market. Nice!
