Task 2D - Ethical Design Issues

Genius of design - Episode 2

Genius of Design is a six-part BBC series, produced in 2010. The series focuses on the history of design, and the movement/concepts that shape today's design Industry.Design for Living is the second episode of this series, and focuses on the varying design philosophies of Modernism and Design Consumerism/Individualism.

The episode begins with Modernism, with its influence on Bauhaus. This movement was a response against the style known as Art Nouveau, which used organic form, and involved a high degree of ornamental material. However, Modernism focus on minimalism, and pieces were reduced to their function, and the design was directed toward the function, while reaching maximum possible quality. Modernism was concerned with making pieces readily available to the masses, with Bauhaus encouraging this by mixing an eclectic group of skills together. Artists were mixed with construction workers and tradespeople, combining structure, with aesthetics, form, use and structure.

The documentary discusses how the general public did not embrace Modernism, particularly in England. This public reluctance was attributed to the limiting nature of Modernism, for instance the Frankfurt Kitchen, although highly functional and efficient, was cold and demanded that users arrange their kitchen activities to suit the kitchen, rather than the other way around. After World War 1, people sought comfort, and whilst Modernism offered functionality, it did not offer comfort, with Bauhaus chairs being designed to look at, not to sit in. As such, the general public rejected Modernism.

In order to sell products, design must appeal to the mainstream. Design was not solely for the elite. These designs sought to design according to how people behaved, rather than how people should have behaved.
Consumerism and or Individualism was born...

Problem Discovery - Hospitals and Nursing

After Visiting the Westmead Children's Hospital, and after group discussion, we discovered a problem that was very apparent in hospitals, especially wards, was the Nurses tasks, such as patient information filing, double documentation, sounds from beeping assistance alarms and Iv drips, and the large amount of wasted paper work. It is with this research, that we are evolving our Hospital/nurse assistance device... possibly...

Task 2C - Climate Change

In the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore explores the causes and effects of global warming, and even though climate change is such a detailed and complex topic, Gore presented the issues in a clear manner, and the film was eye-opening and extremely informative. The small animations made the presentation easier to understand, and also visually interesting.

Gore explains that it unethical human behaviour is what has raised the CO2 levels in the atmosphere, and within 50 years it will be off the charts. It was shocking to see how the effects of global warming on natural landmarks like Mt Kilimanjaro and the Himalayas, and it was also shocking to understand that so many natural disasters occurred as a result of the changes in the earth's atmosphere, particularly in the example of Hurricane Katrina.

Human behaviour is destroying the earth and as a result we are destroying ecological niches as well as each other. It is a change in human behaviour that needs to be undertaken, and we need to move away from the habits of unrestricted burning of fossil fuels and land clearing. We need people to be educated on the matter, and this lack of knowledge was shown with the skeptics that believe the notion of global warming is a hoax. It is this type of ignorant behaviour that needs to end.

Industrial designers and society, need to be conscious of these important issues to ensure a step in the right direction towards a better world.
